Gravitational Instability of Cold Matter

We solve the nonlinear evolution of pressureless, irrotational density fluctuations in a perturbed Robertson-Walker spacetime using a new Lagrangian method based on the velocity gradient and gravity gradient tensors. Borrowing results from general relativity, we obtain a set of Newtonian ordinary differential equations for these quantities following a given mass element. Using these Lagrangian fluid equations we prove the following collapse theorem: A mass element whose density exceeds the cosmic mean at high redshift collapses to infinite density at least as fast as a uniform spherical perturbation with the same initial density and velocity divergence. Velocity shear invariably speeds collapse — the spherical tophat perturbation, having zero shear, is the slowest configuration to collapse for a given initial density and growth rate. Two corollaries follow: (1) Initial density maxima are not generally the sites where collapse first occurs. The initial velocity shear (or tidal gravity field) also is important in determining the collapse time. (2) Initially underdense regions undergo collapse if the shear is sufficiently large. If the magnetic part of the Weyl tensor vanishes, the nonlinear evolution is described purely locally by these equations. This condition is exact for highly symmetrical perturbations (e.g., with planar, cylindrical, or spherical symmetry) and may be a good approximation in many other circumstances. Assuming the vanishing of the magnetic part of the Weyl tensor we compute the exact nonlinear gravitational evolution of cold matter. We find that 56% of initially underdense regions collapse in an Einstein-de Sitter universe for a homogeneous and isotropic random field. We also show that, given this assumption, the final stage of collapse is generically two-dimensional, leading to strongly prolate filaments rather than Zel'dovich pancakes. While this result may explain the prevalence of filamentary collapses in some N-body simulations, it is not true in general, suggesting that the magnetic part of the Weyl tensor does not necessarily vanish in the Newtonian limit. – 2 – Subject headings: cosmology: theory — large-scale structure of the universe — gravitation

Neutrinos and Dark Matter
In these lectures I highlight some key features of massive neutrinos in the context of cosmology. I first review the thermal history and the free-streaming kinematics of the uniform cosmic background neutrinos. I then describe how fluctuations in the phase space distributions of neutrinos and other particles arise and evolve after neutrino decoupling according to the linear perturbation theory ...
متن کاملLarge-scale Structure with the SKA
A standard theoretical paradigm for the formation of largescale structure in the distribution of galaxies has now been established, based on the gravitational instability of cold dark matter in a background cosmology dominated by vacuum energy. Significant uncertainties remain in the modelling of complex astrophysical processes involved in galaxy formation, perhaps most fundamentally in the rel...
متن کاملThe Fluid Mechanics of Gravitational Structure Formation
The standard model for gravitational structure formation in astrophysics, astronomy, and cosmology is questioned. Cold dark matter (CDM) hierarchical clustering cosmology neglects particle collisions, viscosity, turbulence and diffusion and makes predictions in conflict with observations. From Jeans 1902 and CDMHC, the non-baryonic dark matter NBDM forms small clumps during the plasma epoch aft...
متن کاملCold Dark Matter Cosmology Conflicts with Fluid Mechanics and Observations
Cold dark matter hierarchical clustering (CDMHC) cosmology based on the Jeans 1902 criterion for gravitational instability gives predictions about the early universe contrary to fluid mechanics and observations. Jeans neglected viscosity, diffusivity, and turbulence: factors that determine gravitational structure formation and contradict small structures (CDM halos) forming from non-baryonic da...
متن کاملA Novel Indicator to Predict the Onset of Instability of a Gravitational Flow on a Slope
In order to present a quantitative indicator for the onset of instability, in this paper, the critical points of a stratified gravitational flow on a slope are found and analyzed. These points are obtained by means of the solution of the two-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations via the standard Arakawa-C finite-difference method. Results show that in the marginal Richardson numbers, the critical...
متن کاملCollapsed and Extended Cold Dark Matter Haloes in Softened N-Body Gravity
The statistical mechanics of N cold dark matter (CDM) particles interacting via a softened gravitational potential is reviewed in the microcanonical ensemble and mean-field limit. A phase diagram for the system is computed as a function of the total energy E and gravitational softening length ǫ. For softened systems, two stable phases exist: a collapsed phase, whose radial density profile ρ(r) ...
